Key Concepts

  • Shares and IPOs: The basics of shares, their initial listing through an Initial Public Offering (IPO), factors causing fluctuations in share value, and the mechanics of buying and selling shares.
  • Dividends: What dividend payments are and how they’re calculated.
  • Investment Risks: The risk associated with shares compared to other investment options and strategies to mitigate risk through diversification.

Students can make investment decisions based on company overviews, industry insights, and performance projections.

How It Works

1. Initial Quiz

Students will start with the Stock Exchange quiz, earning $100 Banqer Dollars per correct answer.

2. Buying/Selling Shares

  • Review available Companies and their share options within the Banqer Stock Exchange (BHX).
  • Click ‘Buy/Sell’ to access the transaction page.
  • Decide between a ‘Buy Order’ or ‘Sell Order’ and review the share price provided.
  • Edit the number of shares they wish to buy or sell.
  • Confirm their decision by clicking ‘Place Order to Buy’ or ‘Place Order to Sell’.
  • Students can then keep track of their investments via the Investment Overview table available in their view of the Stock Exchange.

Note:

  • Students do not pay tax when selling shares.
  • Share prices are determined within the platform and are influenced by each company’s assigned growth and volatility levels.

How Share Prices Work in BHX

Unlike real-world stock exchanges such as the NZX, the BHX does not use supply and demand to influence share prices. Instead:

  • Share prices are based on a company's growth potential and volatility, reflecting the level of risk and opportunity.
  • This simplified pricing model ensures the activity is accessible and manageable within classroom settings.

Teacher Tools

Student Investment Overview: Via the Stock Exchange Expansion area you can view an overview of your class, and how they are engaging with the BHX. The table will show you the status of their activity, i.e. Passive, Active, Not Active etc. and show you the value of their investments, and how much has been earned from any growth. You can view their complete portfolio from here too.

BHX Companies: In the same area you can view all of the available companies that your students will be viewing on their side, and click into each for more information on them.

Investment Leaderboard: Staying in your Stock Exchange Expansion area, you will also have a view of the Investment Leaderboard for your class.
